About Botswanan Pula (BWP)
The Botswana pula (BWP) was first circulated in 1976, is the official currency of Botswana and an unofficial backup currency to Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe abandoned their own currency in September 2008 officially for the South African rand, but unofficially accepting the BWP. Each pula is subdivided into 100 thebe. The BWP is controlled by the central bank of Botswana known as the Bank of Botswana who issues coins in denominations of 5, 10, 25, and 50 thebe and 1, 2, 5 pula as well as banknotes in 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 pula denominations.
Interestingly the word pula is translated as "rain" or "blessing", which in a desert country such as Botswana is oftentimes looked upon as the same. Thebe can be translated to mean "shield".
