The Slovak koruna or crown was issued the ISO code of SKK. This was the official currency of Slovakia from February 1993 until the country converted to the euro in January 2009. The koruna is still in circulation and can be used in many areas. Each koruna is subdivided into 100 haliers and denominations include 20sk, 50sk, 100sk, 200sk, 500sk, 100sk, and 5000sk banknotes. The koruna was switched to the euro at a rate of one euro to 30.1260 korunas. Prices in the country may be seen in korunas as well as in euros.

Foreign currency is accepted at most major cities and banks and money changers provide conversion into the official currency. Nearly every bank in all towns offer exchange desks and there are typically branches located directly in or very close to the old town square in each city. ATMs are also found conveniently around the country even in the smaller towns. ATMs accept Visa and MasterCard and can provide access to foreign accounts with cash withdrawals given in the local currency. Airports offer exchange desks as well and typically provide fairly good rates for foreign currency exchange.

There is currently no restriction placed on the amount of foreign currency that can be exchanged in Slovakia. Most hotels and restaurants will accept credit cards and many accept the US Dollar although this is mainly seen in larger cities. Moneychangers can be found readily near banks or in major shopping centers and many higher end spas and resorts offer foreign currency exchange services as well. Those visiting Slovakia can check current exchange rates in various newspapers or online to ensure that they get the best rates for exchanges. You can also check with your hotel to see if foreign currency exchange desks are available or to see about the proximity to a bank that offers this service.
